Thanks to the Conseil General de L’Ariege the 15th century wall murals in the cathedral, Notre Dame de Sede, at St. Liziers are currently undergoing restoration.
One of these spectacular murals depicts the life of St. Jacques de Compostelle. St Jacques was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, and according to legend his remains were brought to St Jacques de Compostelle, in Spain. In the middle ages pilgrims flocked to St Jacques de Compostelle and St Lizier became one of the many rest stops along the way.
The restoration work on the cathedral in St Lizier is expected to be finished in May 2007. Meanwhile, the public will be invited to admire completed work at various intervals between now and then.
